G etty Images Saybrook Breakwater Lighhouse an auction item Melissa Pionzio Greater Middletown Shoreline September AM EDT Back in July I had blogged about a non profit organization called OakView Preservation Incorporated which had filed a letter of interest with the U.S. government in a attempt to acquirethe Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse in Old Saybrook. It seems this well known landmark spresent owner the U.S. government considers the lighthouse to be excess federal government property which means it s too expensive to keep. So! the lighthouse which for decades has helped ships to safely navigate the Connecticut coastline has been madeavailable to the public by theU.S. General Services Administration . Today s story in The Courant reports thattwo non profit organizations have shown an interest in this cool old structure and have filed letters of interest. The government isn t saying who the non profits are but they have until December to present their ideas on how the lighthouse will be preserved and used. Here s the strange part if either of the non profit splans are not accepted the lighthouse could be auctioned off and placed into the hands of a private buyer. What will that mean for this historic piece of Connecticut history Enfield Keeps Lid On Rising School Lunch Costs Nancy Lastrina Greater Enfield September AM EDT I read with great interest Courant colleague Don Stacom s story today on school lunches. He reports that some school lunch programs in the state are running deficits due to a number of issues increasing poverty lagging subsidies and rising food cost! s all while trying to meet the new standards of the state s healthy food certification program. Can I relate Trying to feed my family of seven requires a bit of coupon cutting comparing weekly costs in advertised flyers shopping for bulk items at warehouses and any other tricks I can come up with. Have tricks of your own E mail me or comment below. I can t imagine trying to deal with rising food costs for thousands of students. Evidently though Enfield is getting it right. Stacom reports Enfield has rising poverty levels but its school lunch cost structure is significantly lower. Lunches there are priced between . and so the . total subsidy is enough to make free meals profitable. Diane Edwards nutrition services director sharply limits expenses by cooking all meals at two kitchens then distributing them to the schools. That saves dozens of hours of preparation and cooking time at individual schools. Enfield students pay in their classrooms for meals so Edwards employs no c! afeteria cashiers either. This chart compares Enfield s lunch prices to those in Bristol higher and Manchester lower . Kudos to those in Enfield keeping a lid on rising costs as families feel the pinch elsewhere. As if any of them will dislodge the economic crisis from the main talking point. Still if anything is going to shake people it will be Alex Gibney s unforgettable Taxi to the Dark Side HBO Monday p.m. . The Oscar and Peabody Award winning documentary from the maker of Enron The Smartest Guys in the Room shows the country s turn to torture and against the Geneva Conventions through a marvelously paced tale that begins with a faultless taxi driver picked up in Afghanistan jailed and beaten to death. Because of his personal history with the issue in his life John McCain is featured somewhat in the film which could have been helped with some updating from the big screen to the small. Part of the reason it was so late coming to TV was that the Discovery Channel held the rights of the film since June but did not ever schedule it. It was after February when Discovery said it would probably never air the film because of its controversy that HBO picked it up vowing to get it on before the election. Discovery for its part said it would show it next year after Bush is out of office . Digging In To Teacher Trenches Jim Farrell Easte! rn Connecticut September AM EDT Mark Dursin isan English teacher at Glastonbury High School who not long ago was trying to figure out how to teach his students about literary allusions you know that writing technique when you make a brief subtle reference to some othercharacter or event. He thought and thought and . Suddenlyan idea hit me like a blast from the gun of Optimus Prime himself I would teach allusion by writing a short story filled with them. Top that Socrates So I started typing up the sheet when suddenly I got stuck like Augustus Gloop in the pipe. I just couldn t think of a single allusion. I usually have the Midas touch when it comes to these kinds of stories but this time the well of inspiration was as empty as a theatre showing a double bill of Daddy Day Camp and Balls of Fury. That to me is classic Dursin. Clever butin a sort of I wish I thought of that way. Mark is a blogger the author of Teacher Trenches Notes from the so called trenches of education. an! d you know other stuff . Here s another snippet this one from his analysis of Dibs Not which is something kids say when they want to avoid just about anything. Some folks may dismiss Dibs Not as a rip off of Not It that great battle cry from Tag but in fact Dibs Not trumps Not It in several key areas. For one thing you ve got the versatility factor. While Not It only holds dominion over the playground Dibs Not reigns over the entire school. In the cafeteria for example students might yell Dibs not cleaning up the table Or the classroom teacher who asks for volunteers to write on the board might find herself serenaded by an entire chorus of Dibs Not Then there s the sheer longevity of Dibs Not. While a definite ceiling looms over Not It which effectively dies when kids stop playing Tag students play Dibs Not throughout elementary school well into middle school and beyond. Finally Mark wrote a great piece about Talk Like a Pirate Day in which he reviews how two guys came up with the idea but only through media coverage did the phenomenon spread ! Ultimately the history of Talk Like a Pirate Day reminds us that just having a great idea isn t enough. How many great ideas after all get locked up in our own private Davy Jones lockers never seeing the light of day You need to share your idea. You need to write it down and then send it out to the world like one of those famed messages in a bottle. And that s perhaps the lasting lesson of Talk Like a Pirate Day that the pen really is mightier than the sword. Or should I say mightiarrrrrrrrr Desperate Again Roger Catlin TV Eye September AM EDT The problem with Desperate Housewives all along may have been Mike Delfino. The mysterious plumber played by hunky James Danton threw a wrench into the neighborhood calm on Wysteria Lane in the first season but producers haven t really found much to do with him since instead battering him with a car accident a coma marriage and now another car wreck. Though he lays out unconscious on the asphalt in the opening scene of the fifth seaso! n start Sunday we find he s not dead but just split up with Susan once more. The big ploy of the new season is to move ahead five years a device borrowed from Lost that allows Marc Cherry to shake up his Etch a Sketch and start stories anew. By now we learn Susan and Mike are sharing custody of their boy the kids of Lynette Scavo are the most changed teenagers who can cause even more problems than they did as boys and her husband isn t helping much in setting them straight. Bree is a Martha Stewart like homemaker whose grown daughter has since returned to take the baby she faked having to protect the teenage mother she s vowing to get him back . Gabrielle may be the most changed losing her glamor for the day to day mothering including an overweight little girl whom she makes merciless fun of she makes her run after the car to force exercise at one point . She s still married to the still blind Carlos. But the spark meant to reinvigorate the show is the return of Edie who has been exiled for five years or one full episode but returned to the st! reet because her new husband a charmer with a criminal background out for revenge. His mystery is a lot like that found in other men introduced into the drama going back to Mike. Portland to hold voter session Tuesday. Pretty much nothing seems worth doing. I just don't have much to say right now. I can't be bothered with anything lately, but whatever. My life's been unremarkable , but so it goes. Not much on my mind recently. Shrug.
