In its latest move into virtualization Microsoft said on Wednesday that it has bought Kidaro a company that helps businesses manage their collection of virtual machines. Microsoft said the technology will make it easier for businesses to manage application compatibility challenges ultimately spurring faster Vista adoption as w! ell as broadening the use of virtual machines within corporations. The challenge we have with Virtual PC today is it doesn t have enterprise level management and deployment with it and the user experience could be improved said Gavriella Schuster a senior director in Microsoft s Windows unit. Schuster said that Kidaro s technology helps on both scores. In addition to tools for setting up and managing virtual machines Kidaro has technology that makes virtual machines less jarring for users making them appear to be part of the standard desktop. Parallels has a similar feature in its Windows on Mac virtualization product . Schuster declined to give financial details on the deal for the privately held firm which has employees with its development based in Israel. Schuster said Kidaro s three founders are remaining with Microsoft and will continue to lead the product s development in Israel. Kidaro s technology will be added to a future version of the company s awkwardly named M! icrosoft Desktop Optimization Pack. The collection of tools is sold as an add on to Microsoft s software assurance program for volume license customers. Other things in the collection include an . Up now are several videos from last week including highlights of a walk around I did with Craig Mundie Microsoft s chief research and strategy officer. Click here for the Craig Mundie video. There was a lot last week from Micropedia to the much touted WorldWide Telescope to a new operating system called Singularity . To make it easier to find it all check out this roundup of all our print and video coverage. Also worth checking out is a video that colleague Kara Tsuboi did looking at some image editing software that Microsoft had on display. While mo! st software looks to edit things out of photos Microsoft Research was showing off a program that adds things back in. The idea is that these days we all shoot a lot of pretty landscapes with little action going on. The program from Microsoft lets you throw in some stock images of cars and people and pets. Ideally of course you would be able to add in your own images but that will have to wait for an updated release. In an e mail Microsoft said that version . . adds suite wide stability and performance improvements along with the security fixes. On its Web site the company offered a little more detail adding T! his update fixes critical issues in Office including issues that might cause Office applications to stop responding or quit unexpectedly. After some delay Microsoft released Office in January. The company has also delayed several times the availability of converter tools that allow its predecessor to read the XML file formats introduced with Office for Windows. As a result Mac owners who need to read the new formats are faced with the choice of either upgrading or relying on the limited beta converters that Microsoft has made available thus far. Microsoft also issued an update Tuesday for the older Office for Mac product. This update fixes a vulnerability that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer s memory with malicious code Microsoft said on its Web site referring to the Microsoft Office for Mac . . update. Some of you may have seen this but there is a YouTube video of music composed using the start up sounds from Windows XP and Windows . I m sure it s not the biggest challenge facing Vista but it is a small example of people finding utility from and an affinity for Microsoft s older Windows versions. What do you think is it an anthem for XP s enduring quality or a swan song for an operating system on the precipice of extinction I ve included the video below. Dave Campbell Credit Microsoft What Microsoft announced was a database in the cloud! service where Web developers can store their data. Those attending the Mix show here were able to sign up for a beta test that is set to begin in three or four weeks with a final version aimed to be launched by the end of the year according to Dave Campbell a technical fellow in Microsoft s SQL Server division. We re taking SQL Server we re pulling pieces of it apart and we re putting it back together Campbell said in an interview. One of the challenges is taking software designed to run highly reliable servers and storage and turning it into a commodity service. But Campbell said that s also where the opportunity lies. In this world dumb and fast rules. If you give up a tiny bit in terms of the degree of consistency in the architecture you can get tremendous resiliency and scale but you want to retain enterprise class quality around data service he explained. Factoring data into classes of data or tiers is one way to improve the class of service using commodity gear he said. What Microsoft is doing in this case with its database is also the ! kind of thing it makes sense to imagine the . With the current set up he said that developers have a fairly easy time getting a site that renders properly in Opera Safari and Firefox but often spend a lot of energy trying to get that same site to also render correctly in Internet Explorer. roundup Mixing it up with Microsoft Click here for full Mix coverage. Web developers burn through a tremendous amount of time getting their sites to work with IE because of IE s special quirks said Schroepfer who I caught up with here at Mix . He said that Microsoft s move toward greater embrace! of standards with Internet Explorer is a good thing. There are some encouraging things there and I hope to see more he said. In particular it would be helpful if Microsoft gave a roadmap for which standards it planned to support down the road that way Web developers could decide earlier to invest time. He said he would really like to see Microsoft support a new graphics standard known as scalable vector graphics. That would be a great win for the Web he said. Meanwhile Schroepfer also talked up the benefits of Firefox which is just hitting its fourth beta and is edging closer to a final release. With its Yahoo Messenger for Vista th! e Internet company has been one of the few consumer software companies to come out with a Windows Vista specific product. Yahoo s updated messenger program for Vista adds voice dialing as well as eye candy known as Voice Visualizations. Credit Yahoo The instant messenger program doesn t have a lot of extra features in some cases it has fewer than the generic Windows version . What it does have is an extremely pleasant look and feel. Using the Windows Presentation Foundation graphics engine built into Vista the program smoothly resizes Windows and moves buddy icons around based on the screen real estate available. The product which has taken longer than expected has been available in a text messaging only preview version since December. Yahoo plans to announce on Friday that a beta version due out sometime in the second quarter will add voice messaging PC to PC and PC to phone as well as the ability to send SMS messages. I had a chance to check out the software on Thursday t! hanks to product manager Josh Jacobson who is attending the Mix trade show here. Danger s Sidekick device uses a Java operating system while Yahoo is known for its extensive use of open source software to power its services. Speaking at the Mix conference Ballmer said that Microsoft would likely take on some of the open source PHP applications that Yahoo relies on for its services again assuming Yahoo ever ! starts returning Microsoft s phone calls. roundup Mixing it up with Microsoft Click here for full Mix coverage. We should not have two of everything Ballmer said. We ll have to sort some of that through. He said that undoubtedly Microsoft will choose to go with Microsoft developed services in some areas and Yahoo developed ones in other areas meaning that Microsoft will have open source powered services for some time. I m sure a bunch of them will be running at high scale and in production for a long time to come he said. On Danger Ballmer said that Microsoft was attracted to the way the Sidekick gets applications and data to its users as well as the consumer interface and appeal. However he made clear that he believed those things could be brought over to the Windows Mobile operating system and still preserved. He was asked whether given Apple s iPhone announcement Microsoft was trying to get Silverlight on the Apple phone. Silverlight for the iPhone is of course interesting he said. I can t say there s been extensive discussion with Guy s old boss. He also said it was unclear whether Apple s business model which takes percent of iPhone application revenue would allow for royalty free distribution of Silverlight. Apple has said it will allow free applications. He also noted that Apple might be taking too large a slice gr! abbing percent of every bit of revenue. Mary J. Blige GrowingPains Posted on May by thebestsongs Joy Pain Guide Rating On Mary J. Blige s eighth studio album the reigning Queen of Hip Hop Soul once again proves that she is indeed music royalty and has no intention of abdicating her throne anytime soon. is a well produced extremely well sung album about both the joy and pain the sunshine and rain that comes with living life. Mary J. may have sworn off drama but on this album she finds out that it s much easier said than done. And although she may be music royalty she makes it perfectly clear on the album that she still goes through some of the same tribulations that ordinary people do.Sunshine RainNobody s perfect. That s! the big overreaching message on Mary J. Blige s eighth studio album . Mary may have sworn off drama and turned over a new leaf but it takes time to grow and mature as a person and this album s primarily about her continuing evolution. The album s first two singles Just Fine and Work That focus on the sunny side of life particularly the feel good dance song Just Fine where Mary who s dealt with self doubt and insecurity in the past happily sings . And on the uplifting Work That Mary spreads her self love message to include the young girls who look up her . Both songs along with the sexy Grown Woman featuring Ludacris are rare for this album in that they don t contain any conflict they re basically straightforward joyful and uplifting songs with positive messages about the power of womanhood.A Work in Progress Single cover Geffen Records. But despite her uplifting messages elsewhere on Mary makes it perfectly clear that although she s a strong capable self confident woman she! s not without flaws. On Work In Progress Growing Pains Mary sings . And on other songs such as the relationship songs Stay Down Hurt Again and Roses Mary sings about the ups and downs of relationships. Particularly good is Roses a song co written by Terius The Dream Nash and produced by Chris Tricky Stewart. Roses is an I don t wanna be bothered song on which a fiery determined Mary puts a man in check over a stark beat that she alternately sings and talks over. she says toward the end of the song. . Roses is Mary at her most emotionally fragile she s alternately argumentative loving intimidating and vulnerable all in the same song. All in all may not Mary s best album but it s definitely one of the best R B releases of . Possibly related posts automatically generated Mary J.
