What Causes Your Snoring

Snoring is the noise caused by parts of your throat vibrating as you breath. Snoring only happens while you are sleeping because this is when the muscles are most relaxed. When the muscles are relaxed the components in your throat drop down to block the normal airflow through the passage which has been narrowed. The air moving through this narrowed passage is what causes the snoring.

Remedies for snoring are often very apparent. Other times they require extensive studies on factors that are related and can either aggravate the problem or cause the condition. Some of the more common causes along with simple ways to cure them are listed below.

1. Overweight-Its well known that many people in the United States are overweight due to not exercising enough, eating too much or a combination of both. Its common knowledge that that overweight people are more apt to snore than ones that are slimmer. The primary cause of their snoring is because their throats are fleshier and therefore have more blockages that can narrow the air passages. The simple way for an overweight person to cut down on their excessive snoring is to lose some weight.

2. Alcohol-Drinking alcohol relaxes the throat muscles which as we learned will be the immediate problem of excessive snoring. By eliminating any alcoholic beverages just before bedtime you can avoid many of the problems associated with the snoring.

3. Smoking-There are many reasons not to smoke and among them are the modification to your throat. Over time mucous will build up in the throat to ease the smoke and nicotine passing through it and reduce inflammation. A larger than normal amount of mucous can be released which will cause the small blood vessels in the lungs to swell along with the throat. When this happens the air ways are again being blocked causing the increased snoring. Sleep apnea is also a problem caused by these blockages and can cause breathing interruptions. These interruptions are caused by irregular breathing patterns. This results to snoring and poor sleep.

4. Sleep Patterns-Going to bed at the same time and getting 7 or 8 hours of sleep will help keep your snoring in check. When your sleep pattern is interrupted your breathing will become unbalanced which can cause snoring. Noises from your bed partner or other things will also cause unbalanced breathing and snoring. Try to make your sleeping area as quiet as possible. Sometimes soothing sounds or white noises from a recording will help mask other disturbing sounds.

5. Sleeping Positions-Due to gravity pulling on their tongue and throat muscles, people who sleep on their backs usually have more problems with snoring than ones who sleep on their sides. Along with the gravity the throat is in a more restful position, which causes parts of the throat and tongue to drop down and restrict the air flow cause a person to snore.

By sleeping in an elevated position there will be some relief. The recommended amount is about 30 degrees. With this elevation your diaphragm is relaxed and the tongue won’t restrict the air flow through the throat area.

Medical Problems-There are a number of medical conditions that can cause snoring. Allergies for instance can cause swelling or inflammation of the air passage. Adenoids and tonsils are also cause of snoring especially if they are large. Many time a cold or sinus condition will block your nose causing you to breathe through you mouth which can cause you to snore.

If you do experience a block nasal passage you can use a spray to clear it so you won’t be forced to breath through your mouth and probably end up snoring. Nasal strips are another aid that may help you breath through your nose rather than your mouth.

If you still snore after trying these things you may want to explore surgery, depending on how much snoring is affecting your life as well as those around you. Of course I would think of surgery as a last resort but sometimes it is necessary for your health.

The relaxing ambience that encourages meditation can be achieved by placing a bamboo or rattan chair plus a small table near a wall, or in front of a lattice fence. If your garden is in a hot part of the country, group the seats under a tree or parasol. Stillness is the key word here.

Two other abstract notions suggested in a Zen garden are represented physically by a focal point that is not placed centrally, and secondly, a ‘window’ to a hidden part in your garden.

This can be represented by a piece of tall, latticed fence work, or a tree with shrubs around, or a pagoda, or even simply a bench that is partly concealed. This ‘hide and reveal’ theme is suggestive of the quest for human enlightenment and it also offers privacy. You may wish to incorporate your seating here for that reason.

The introduction of something tall lends itself to the look of the Japanese garden. Western gardens tend to be larger and boast a flat expanse of lawn; Japanese homes usually have tiny gardens. They tend to be more vertical, and tall shrubs will often be placed to hide the house from the street.

For an inexpensive focal point, you can dig a bed and put a bamboo or a red Japanese maple (miniature or full size) plus other plants in it. The bamboo bushes and trees will live in most mild North American areas, though you may have to ‘cover it’ in severe frosts. A very large cactus or groupings of cacti will also make an interesting focal point.

Smaller beds can be dug in across the yard. The center of the yard is deliberately left empty, and a lack of symmetry is desired. This reflects the lack of perfection in the world!

For some authentic Japanese atmosphere, one tall and one shorter black lantern can be well placed along your winding (never straight!) pathway, or sometimes peeking out from amongst a selection of shrubs and plants.

A small pathway can lead to nowhere, and Zen gardens will always have at least one pathway of either white round gravel or gray flattened gravel wending its way through your shrubs; several glimpses of this pathway will satisfy the unity and harmony requirement of Zen gardens.

Whilst lanterns are more of a Buddhist tradition, they have come to represent the essence of the Japanese garden, so they are also included in Zen designs.

One very large Japanese lantern and one smaller one elsewhere can look effective. These usually come in two traditional styles, one more fat-bellied and squat than the other. They are most commonly found in black or pale gray.

Some of the most inexpensive modern lighting will lend itself to the Japanese mode. The ‘push-in’ mushroom type lamps are very easily assimilated into the Zen garden design.

Rocks and stone are a big feature of the Japanese garden, with different sized rocks grouped seemingly at random. Smaller rocks will look good grouped with your focal point, or added to a bush or plant grouping.

Try to find at least one big rock. If you have one big one, you can group smaller ones beside it and finish off with a fern or two. Stones represent life’s immovable mountains.

Property Investment in the UK Over the Next 6 Months

The Christmas break is a great time to look back on the previous year, work out what you did well, what could have been better and reset your goals for 2009.

It is the ideal time to review your personal goals, property goals and any other business goals. And crucially make sure you write them down! This will make a significant difference in how you do overall this year. Like many property investors I have seen some values drop, and some properties cause more issues than others, but have also seen big positives with such dramatic drops in borrowing rates. I also think, more than ever, the last 4 months of 2008 made me even more glad I invest in property rather than

a) Not invest in anything or
b) Invest in the stock market or a traditional pension.

While some of the property headlines are pretty negative this is understandable but it is all relative. Compared to the FTSE top 500 companies which saw drops of 33% over the last 12 months ie most pension funds saw a drop in value by a third, the UK property market dropping by an average of 12% over the last 12 months is a significant difference.

Within that average as always the most affordable parts of the UK did better eg Scotland dropped by just 2%, and areas such as Hull, Hartlepool and Cumbria all dropped by less than 5% as an average over 12 months.

But also remember if people didn’t need to move they generally didn’t move – the majority of people selling in the last 6-9 months were those who were “distressed” sellers or had to take a low offers – which was always going to have dramatic knock on effect on average prices – but this doesn’t clearly tell us the full story on affordability – and until probably later this year it is hard to say what true values are in many areas.

What is for sure, as soon as more credit comes back in, and there are clear indications this is continuing to improve, then low offers will be less likely to be accepted.

No one forecast such large credit restrictions in 2008 and the knock on effect in certain property markets, and it is hard to be sure what will happen in 2009 but one thing is clear – affordability and attractive rental yields are at the best they have been in the UK for the last 3-4 years.

Gross rental yields, which were at around 5-6% a year ago, are now at 6.5-8% due to prices dropping and rents rising in many areas.

Prices may have dropped by around 12% as an average across the UK, but if you have a varied portfolio say spread across the UK and a couple of emerging markets, your overall yield should have risen with borrowing rates dropping and rents rising. Compare this to owning shares in large companies, where it is unlikely dividends will have risen as they will often be cash poor with cashflow issues.

This makes buy to let more attractive than ever in the UK and markets such as Czech Republic!

So how long will these opportunities last?

Six months? 12 Months?

Already borrowing rates are improving, with libor rate down to under 3%, and several lenders are close to increasing the LTV they will lend, as long as rental coverage is there. It is great to be able to find deals again where you can invest for very little funds and make over £100 net a month!

I have spoken to 1-2 investors who have said they are looking to wait 6-9 months when they think prices will be lower.

Most people saying this have no real reason for saying this, apart from the fact they have read this may happen in the newspapers – and have no real way of measuring this as are not too close to the actual numbers – but it allows them to put off making a decision for a while – bit like saying I ll get fit in the New Year! Often people who would say this would not understand what is good value and what is not – and you won’t learn this in the newspapers! You should have your own clear idea on what is good value based on rental return and local affordability.

The main reason it is daft to wait is if you can buy an investment property now, for 20% below today’s market value ie perhaps as much as 30% less than last years value, tie up very little money in the process and have positive cashflow why risk waiting?!

When the bottom of the market is called it will probably be 2-3 months after the actual bottom of the market has occurred and if everyone suddenly realises the value of their property in these high yielding areas, and mortgages are more available, then you won’t be able to negotiate a 25% discount any longer that’s for sure!

Actually as soon as 85% mortgages are back, vendors will be under less pressure to give big discounts.

Sanyo RL4930 (Sprint) Review

Now that Sprint has absorbed Nextel, the carrier’s Ready Link phones seem to be suffering from an identity crisis. Before the merger, the handsets were sort of Nextel-lite. You could get push-to-talk service and a rugged handset, but you didn’t have to lug around a brick, totally devoid of style, and you didn’t have to be chained to Nextel’s businesscentric services. But now that Nextel and Sprint have joined forces, and Nextel is putting out smaller, more attractive phones, Sprint’s Ready Link handsets just look a little ridiculous. Take the new Sanyo RL4930: Although it is on the bulky side, as well as sports rubber edges and PTT capability, we’d rather go with the real thing and just get a Nextel phone, such as the i355. The RL4930 is $189, but it’s cheaper with a service plan.

To be perfectly frank, the Sanyo RL4930 is not a looker. A dull candy bar shape, along with a basic-gray color scheme and a protruding antenna, makes it more like a cordless phone than a mobile device. Also, considering it measures 4.5 by 2 by 1 inches and weighs 4.4 ounces, it’s not compact by any means. On the upside, a rubber coating on either spine adds a touch of durability, but the extendable antenna is rather flimsy.

The Sanyo RL4930’s 65,000-color display measures 1.6 inches (128×112 pixels) and is the best thing about the handset’s design. Although its overall resolution is a bit washed out, it’s nonetheless fine for viewing the user-friendly menus. You can adjust the contrast, the font size, and the backlighting time, but you can’t alter the brightness.

Below the Sanyo RL4930’s display are the main navigation controls with a standard Sanyo design. There’s a five-way toggle that acts as a shortcut to messaging, and the phone book has a menu where you can program more shortcuts, as well as a My Content folder for storing games and other downloaded files. The toggle is large enough, but the other navigation controls may trouble users with larger fingers. Two soft keys, dedicated Web and Back buttons, and the Talk and End/power keys are all much too small. However, we liked the fact that the Back buttons double as a key lock if held down and that there’s a dedicated speakerphone button below the keypad. Speaking of the keypad, the buttons are raised just above the surface of the phone, which made it easy to dial by feel. They’re also decently sized and lit by a green backlighting. The only controls on the outside of the phone are the Ready Link button and a wide volume rocker on the left spine.

On Sunday, V. Eugene Robinson of New Hampshire, the Episcopal Church’s first openly gay bishop, will deliver the invocation at the kickoff event celebrating the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States. His part in the inaugural festivities is appropriate symbolism in light of Mr. Obama’s choice of anti-gay Pastor Rick Warren, leader of a Southern California mega-church, to deliver the invocation at the swearing-in ceremony Tuesday at the Capitol.

Mr. Warren was a high-profile supporter of California’s Proposition 8, which won at the polls last November and repealed the state’s same-sex marriage rights. Mr. Obama’s supporters in the homosexual community and other civil rights advocates have been justifiably disappointed that Mr. Obama would give an anti-gay fundamentalist such a visible stage. Bishop Robinson’s appearance will ameliorate some of that sting.

Symbolism is helpful. But if Mr. Obama is the “fierce advocate” of equal rights for gays that he says he is, it will be followed soon by concrete action. That would include repeal of the unjust “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which forces homosexuals in the military to deny their true nature or be thrown out. Polling shows that the public has come around to supporting gays serving openly in the military. The new president and Congress should repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell” this year.

IMAGINE owning a superbike that punts out a massive 168bhp of raw V-Twin power with 97lb/ft of torque.

Now imagine hitting a corner apex and whacking that throttle open as hard as you can. Now imagine that instead of history’s biggest highside, you’re greeted by a gripping tyre that propels you out of the corner and into the distance, in a way that no other production superbike could ever manage, just like you were some kind of Casey Stoner riding clone.

You’ve just imagined riding the brand new toy from the land of Spaghetti and red dream machines - Ducati’s 1198 S.

It was only two years ago that Ducati brought out three versions of its stunning new superbike, the 1098. The £12,000 base model, the £14,000 higher-spec S, and the £24,000 World Superbike-derived, all-singing all-dancing R version. Of course, there’s also the £40,000 MotoGP-derived Desmosedici RR but that’s an altogether different kettle of fish.

Now Ducati has updated its flagship by giving the 90° V-twin Testastretta Evoluzione engine 100cc more and fitting it into two versions of 1198, the base-model Biposto (that’s two-seater in Italian), and higher-spec S.

The engine’s increased bore and stroke brings capacity up to the 1,200cc limit for V-twins in the World Superbike championship, which Troy Bayliss won in 2008 racing the 1098. The 1198’s improved engine also gets new crankcases and bigger valves, all of which increases maximum power by 10bhp all the way across the rev range, and boosts torque.

But the high-tech gadget that lets you use every last drop of that performance is the Ducati Traction Control (DTC) fitted to the 1198 S.

Much has been written about the way 2007 MotoGP champion Casey Stoner rides his Ducati - how he whacks the throttle open from the apex, letting the bike’s electronics control the power and torque output to secure grip. This is exactly what the 1198 S’s DTC does, but on a production machine. This MotoGP-derived technology has the ability to turn a ham fisted throttle jockey into a riding sensation.

DTC was initially fitted to the 1098 R, but ironically this first production version of the technology could only be used on race bikes (which the R is). That older system destroys catalytic converters by dumping fuel into the exhausts when a reduction in torque is required. But the new system cuts off the fuel supply rather than the spark that ignites the fuel, so the catalytic converters aren’t affected. And that’s got to be more environmentally friendly too.

But the 1198 S is not just about corner exits. It’s also about the way it flies down the straights at warp speed with a delicious Ducati drone emanating from the exhausts, the way it turns fluidly into corners, the way it handles like a dream.

Apple unveils software updates, new laptop

(01-06) 12:59 PST SAN FRANCISCO – There was no Steve Jobs or game-changing gadget at Macworld’s keynote presentation Tuesday, but Apple marketing chief Philip Schiller kept things lively by introducing eye-catching software updates and a supercharged, sleek MacBook Pro.

Schiller, who handles worldwide product marketing and was a last-minute stand-in for Jobs, capped off the Cupertino tech giant’s final year of participation in the expo, which runs through Friday at Moscone Center in San Francisco.

With Apple exiting the Macworld stage and Jobs being treated for a hormonal imbalance, Schiller offered announcements devoid of huge surprises. Rumors of an Apple netbook or large iPod Touch weren’t realized, but Schiller seemed to have a good time talking up the Mac platform and updates to the Apple family.

“I’m so personally excited to be the one delivering Macworld 2009 to you. I’d like to thank everybody for showing up,” he said.

The presentation included updates to the iLife and iWork software suites, a new 17-inch MacBook Pro with an 8-hour battery and a new digital rights management-free iTunes library with tiered pricing.

Starting at $2,799 and available in late January, the new MacBook Pro features Apple’s unibody aluminum enclosure, which other models received this past summer. But the big news was the battery life for the machine, which has a 40-percent larger battery capable of up to eight hours of continuous use.

Apple engineers worked with advanced chemistry, monitoring technology and power distribution to develop a battery able to last over 1,000 charges, a lifespan that is three times the industry standard, Schiller said. The laptop is a svelte .98 inches thick and 6.6 pounds; offers Intel Core 2 Duo processors up to 2.93 GHz, up to 8 GB of RAM, both discrete and integrated graphic chips from Nvidia, 320 GB of hard drive space, and an LED backlit display that has 1920 x 1200 resolution with 78 percent more pixels than its 15-inch sibling.

Schiller showed off new versions of iLife ‘09 and iWork ‘09. The iLife software includes a new iPhoto program with face detection capability that allows users to organize their picture library by - you guessed it - faces. Users also can organize photos by location using geo-tagged pictures. And iPhoto includes a new slide show feature with upgraded effects that can be synced to an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Americans Turn to Complementary, Alternative Medicine for Pain Relief

Complementary and alternative medical practices - which include health products and therapies that aren’t generally considered part of conventional medicine - are frequently a part of Americans’ health care regimens. That’s the finding of a new survey released this month by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), which is part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Thirty-eight percent of American adults are using some form of complementary and alternative medicine, known as CAM, to help with their health.

NCCAM Director Dr. Josephine Briggs says the new survey provides the most current, comprehensive and reliable source of information on Americans’ use of unconventional remedies such as medicinal herbs, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, massage and chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation.

Most of these patients, Briggs says, hope to alleviate pain.

“The most common reason why people turn to complementary and alternative medicine in our survey results is chronic back pain - far and away, the leading reason to use complementary and alternative medicine,” she says. “Neck pain, joint pain, headache: All these other conditions are also given as common reasons. But chronic back pain is the leading reason, a very common and difficult condition to treat.”

As the federal government’s lead agency for scientific research into CAM therapies, the center funds hundreds of projects and trials, supports training for researchers and encourages integration of proven CAM therapies into conventional practice.

Another important part of NCCAM’s mission is to publicize news and information about complementary and alternative medicine, and promote discussions about it between patients and their health care providers.

Briggs notes, “It is very important that people talk to their physicians and other health care providers about their use of complementary and alternative medicine.”

Cheesy Bread

Ingredients

* 8 oz shredded Mozzarella cheese
* 1 lb shredded sharp cheddar cheese
* 1/2 to 1 cup chopped green onion (to taste)
* 1/2 cup mayonnaise
* 2 Tbsp sour cream (optional)
* 3-4 cloves garlic, minced
* 1 stick unsalted butter (1/2 cup, 4 ounces), softened to the point of being slightly melted

* 1 to 2 loaves of French or Italian bread (I used Ciabatta), depending on the size of the loaves

1 In a large bowl, mix together the cheeses and the green onion. Stir in the mayonnaise and sour cream. In a separate small bowl blend the butter and garlic until smooth. Add the butter mixture to the cheese mixture.

2 Preheat broiler. Slice loaf of bread in half horizontally, lay crust side down. Spread cheese mixture over the bread. Place under the broiler until nicely browned, about 3 to 5 minutes.

3 Remove from broiler and let sit for 5 minutes until cool enough to handle. Slice the bread with a bread knife. Serve.

Makes 30 to 40 slices.

For some, Christmas is more than a tree, gifts: Seasonal fanatics have a holiday obsession

A hurricane and a recession could easily spread a serious case of the bah, humbugs this season.

But not for the Christmas fanatics. For these self-taught decorators who transform their homes into holiday havens thick with Santas, ornaments and things that go blink in the night, Christmas always arrives early and stays late.
A tale of two Michaels

For every Christmas addict there is an enabler. And between the months of October and December, this pretty much describes Michael Briden and Mike Lowery.

“I have the inspiration, and he has the installation,” Briden deadpans.

Briden is the collector, favoring glass ornaments by Christopher Radko and Santa figurines by Brian Kidwell and Jim Shore. He decorates each of the holiday trees in the Heights bungalow he and Lowery share — no small job, since there’s at least one tree in every downstairs room.

Lowery does the traditional “dad” jobs: hangs garland around the window frames, puts the toppers on each tree before Briden starts to decorate, picks up ornaments on his way home from hunting and fishing trips.

Every year, the two transform their handsome bungalow with sage green walls into a holiday wonderland where first-time guests are hard-pressed to focus on anything but the dé cor. As Lowery says, “Christmas has definitely exploded in this house.”

It helps that the pair co-own Another Place in Time, a garden center in the Heights that sells some of the decorative items and ornaments Briden collects.

Briden, who is also a loan operations manager at Integrity Bank, admits that he is particular about the quality and presentation of his collections.

He likes his Santas to look friendly, not scary. He enjoys creating new vignettes with his Christmas ornaments; this year, Santa’s Sweet Shop appears in his kitchen window, with a jar of gingerbread men and cookies and glass candies. And each of his Christmas trees has a theme, from the hunting and fishing tree in Lowery’s room, to the Grinch tree in the bathroom, to the slim and showy “Feathered Friends” tree in the family room.

The show-stopper is “The Night Before Christmas” tree, which gathers Santas, reindeers, gifts and all the usual Christmas Eve suspects.

When one goes to so much trouble to create a Christmas atmosphere, it’s a shame not to share it. Briden estimates that he and Lowery host half a dozen social gatherings every December so that friends can see the house.

As thrilled as Briden is with this year’s décor, he is always in the market for something new. Gazing at his animal tree, he ticks off the rarer ornaments that adorn it. A buffalo. A rhinoceros. A skunk. A giraffe. But he can’t help but notice what he’s missing.

“I don’t have a platypus,” Briden says, “and I don’t have any dinosaurs.”

The holiday decorating gene is strong with Jennifer Emshoff. Growing up in Klein with a mother who’s a part-time interior designer, she learned early that every holiday deserves festive dé cor and special dishes.

So when Emshoff, a senior contract analyst with El Paso Exploration & Production, moved into her Eastwood bungalow in 2001, it was a fait accompli that the holidays would be well-represented.

Her Christmas decorating schedule begins the day after Thanksgiving at her childhood home, when her mom starts pulling out her own Christmas finery. Emshoff is always on hand to assist.

“I give her all day Friday,” she says, “then I come back and start working on my own house. It takes two full days for the inside and then a night to put up the lights on the outside.”

This year presented a new challenge for Emshoff, who recently transformed her bright blue and yellow living space into a richer, ranchy style, with dark leather and rustic touches. This meant a new backdrop for Christmas.

Dominating the living room is a full-size white tree with shiny, multicolored ornaments, many with a Texas theme. On the floor of the dining room, ranch meets Christmas in a pair of ceramic cowboy boots stuffed with holly and red berries. The formal dining table is set for Christmas dinner and a long kitchen counter that usually serves as the bar has become a winter village.

Samsung Behold (for T-Mobile) Cell Phone

The 3G Samsung Behold ($150 from T-Mobile), the younger sibling of the Samsung Omnia on the Verizon network, is a slick cell phone with a bevy of advanced multimedia features and a responsive touch screen. However, the Behold lacks Wi-Fi and a standard headphone jack, and its Web browser is a bit counterintuitive.

Slightly smaller than the Omnia, the Behold measures 2.1 by 4.1 by 0.5 inches. Weighing 3.9 ounces, it’s light but feels solid in the hand.

The Behold’s 3-inch touch screen takes up the majority of the phone, and three physical keys–end, send, and back–reside underneath. The landscape touch-screen QWERTY keyboard, with generously spaced keys and vibrating feedback, is comfortable to use. I didn’t notice any lag between when I typed and when the results appeared on the screen, a problem I’ve experienced with some other touch-screen keyboards. The Behold’s predictive text feature gives two word choices, but you can also turn predictive text off with a dedicated key on the keyboard. The arrangement includes a few dedicated punctuation keys, as well.

The Behold uses Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, also seen on the Omnia. But unlike the Omnia, which seemed sluggish running Windows Mobile, the Behold is very responsive. The accelerometer, which reacted slowly on the Omnia, flipped from portrait to landscape quickly and smoothly on this handset. I encountered some lag only when I scrolled through lists of contacts or my media library. And otherwise, I found TouchWiz very user-friendly.

The lens for the Behold’s 5-megapixel camera, along with a flash, is located on the phone’s metallic back (which is available in a brushed espresso or light-rose finish). A volume rocker and a headphone/USB jack lie on the left spine of the device, while a dedicated camera key and a phone-lock key sit on the right.

Call quality was very good overall. My contacts sounded loud and clear, and I heard no static or interference. Parties on the other end heard some background noise, but otherwise the sound quality was clean. I experienced no dropped calls.

The Today screen–the Behold’s home screen–has a widget bar running along its left side. You can arrange the widgets in any order, as well as drag one into the main part of the screen to launch its respective app. To end the application, you slide the widget back onto the bar. Available widgets include a calendar, a phone book, a music player, and a clock. But other than rearranging widgets and removing them, you don’t have a lot of room for customization; you can’t add new widgets to the bar or buy new programs (there is no app store), which was disappointing.

The Behold offers a full HTML browser, which is a nice addition for a non-smart-phone handset. The browser is difficult to use on occasion: Scrolling through pages wasn’t as smooth a process as on other touch-screen browsers, and getting the hang of navigating took time. For example, to zoom in on a page, you must touch the magnifying-glass icon at the top of the browser and then select the page size to view. The phone doesn’t do Wi-Fi, either, but that didn’t seem like too big of a loss; Web pages loaded very quickly over T-Mobile’s 3G network.

The Behold’s standout feature is its 5-megapixel camera, with 4X digital zoom and a power LED flash. The camera has four resolution settings, light metering, adjustable ISO, a self-timer, a self-portrait mirror on the back cover, an antishake feature, and a setting for shooting backlit subjects. It also has three fun shooting modes (continuous, panorama, and mosaic), as well as a smile-shot mode that will take another shot if the subject is frowning.

Mazda6 is all-new for 2009 and on target for “Car of the Year”

Midsize sedans are no longer blandly styled, boring boxes for driving to work. Today we are seeing emotionally provocative and exciting designs on the common, everyday four-door sedan.

The Chevy Malibu didn’t become the 2008 North American Car of the Year by accident. Interior comfort and fine handling led by a compelling exterior design caught the attention of critics. So who should lead the pack of contenders for the title 2009 Car of the Year? I’d be willing to put money on the 2009 Mazda6.

The emotional design cues that are so essential to attracting buyers to toy cars, such as roadsters and convertibles, are finding their way to the meat-and-potatoes of the car market, the conservative five-passenger everyday driver - the midsize sedan.

With a starting price of $18,550, the glamorous Mazda6 looks like it’s worth twice that amount. There’s a silky sheen that floats over the velvet sheet metal. The Mazda team says the all-new Mazda6 is infused with Japanese values. The exterior glow, as on my dark blue tester, does reflect a harmony with nature, which is so intrinsic to the Japanese culture. The instrumentation gauges were brilliant in reds, purples, blues, whites and blacks without being blinding.

The Mazda6 has a low, flat, planted stance. And if you can imagine delicate ivory inlays in wood and furniture then you will understand the attention to craftsmanship designers say they applied to the details of the new Mazda6.

If you were going to consider the Mazda6, then you would want to test-drive both engine options offered on the 2009 sedan. Available in four trims (SV, Sport, Touring and Grand Touring), the base model is standard with the 2.5-liter, 170-horsepower four-cylinder engine coupled to a six-speed manual transmission.

The top-of-the-line model I drove was equipped with the 3.7-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This powerful engine developed 272 horsepower at 6250 rpm and 269 pound-feet of torque at 4250 rpm. The EPA figures are estimated at 17 miles per gallon city, 25 mpg highway. The vehicle’s as-tested price was more consistent with its pricey looks at $32,790.

All 2009 Mazda6 sedans come standard with dynamic stability control, side curtain air bags, front seat-mounted side-impact air bags, antilock brakes, air conditioning, plus power windows, mirrors and door locks.

Music review: Elliott Carter celebration

If you can judge a prophet by his followers, maybe you can judge a composer by the quality of musicians who are inspired to champion his music. And if that’s so, then Elliott Carter - the subject of a weekendlong celebration at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in advance of his 100th birthday Thursday - is doing something right.

The two-day bash, sponsored by San Francisco Performances, included a showing of Frank Scheffer’s documentary film “Elliott Carter: A Labyrinth of Time” and lectures by musicologist Robert Greenberg. But the chief focus, naturally, was the music, which got bold, impassioned and strikingly eloquent performances from artists devoted to Carter’s work.

Saturday’s concert by the Pacifica Quartet - violinists Simin Ganatra and Sibbi Bernhardsson, violist Masumi Per Rostad and cellist Brandon Vamos - was a complete tour through Carter’s string quartets, from the expansive breakthrough of the String Quartet No. 1, written in 1951, to the Fifth Quartet, which joined the catalog in 1995.

And on Sunday afternoon, pianist Ursula Oppens gave a similarly comprehensive overview of the composer’s keyboard works. The recital was anchored by his two major piano compositions - the Piano Sonata (1945-46) and “Night Fantasies” (1980) - and bedecked by a handful of shorter pieces dating from the past 15 years.

What came through most stirringly in both events was the devoted sense of advocacy that Carter seems to engender in performing musicians. As difficult as much of his music is for the listener, the difficulties it entails for instrumentalists - from both a technical and interpretive standpoint - can only be more profound.

Yet here were artists clearly delighted and eager to dedicate themselves to making the best possible case for this music - and succeeding in doing so.

ACACIA (a-ka’sha). About 1200 species of acacia are scattered through the warm regions of the world. Most of them are shrubs or small trees. Some are matted plants a few inches high. All are thorny and pod-bearing. The tiny sweet-smelling blossoms cluster together in fluffy balls or cylinder shapes. They range in color from deep yellow to almost white. The leaves are usually grayish and fernlike. The acacia is quick-growing and short-lived.
Australia has about 300 species of acacia. The early settlers called them wattles because they used the pliant branches to make wattle-and-daub huts. The golden wattle is Australia’s national Bower.
In the southwestern United States acacias are grown in many parks and gardens. The ornamental species were imported from Australia. The native catclaw (Texas mimosa) grows wild and (Types Of Flowers )is heartily disliked because of its strong hooked spines. The Arizona Indians, however, made meal of the pods. Smaller acacias are eaten by cattle and horses.
Gum arabic is obtained from an African species (see Gums and Resins). The Australians get tannin, used for tanning leather, from the bark of some species and make furniture of the hard, dark “black-wood” acacia. The wood of an Indian species is the chief source of catechu, a dye for true khaki. France grows several kinds for perfume.
The genus acacia belongs to the mimosa tribe of the pea family . The black locust is sometimes called “false acacia” . The plant that florists call mimosa is actually an acacia.

Homeowners refinance, put savings in piggy banks

When mortgage rates dropped to the lowest levels in almost a year, Warren Zeger seized the opportunity to slash $720 off his monthly mortgage payment by refinancing his home in Potomac, Md.

Just don’t expect him to spend the savings.

“I’d love to tell you I’m going to spend it to help prop up the economy, but we’ve tightened our belts,” said Zeger, 61, a retired attorney. “I plan on holding on to it.”

Zeger echoed homeowners The Associated Press interviewed nationwide who have taken advantage of lower rates since Nov. 25th. They planned to stuff the money they saved under the mattress or pay off bills. Refiinance activity has surged as interest rates tumbled about 1 percentage point to around 5.5 percent in response to the Federal Reserve’s plan to scoop up $600 billion of mortgage-related securities.

“We’ve had a lot homeowners waiting for some time” for this drop in rates, said Ritch Workman, co-owner of Workman Mortgage in Melbourne, Fla.

The Fed’s move was the latest in an unprecedented series of actions to help stabilize the housing and credit markets as well as the broader economy. However, pushing down mortgage rates may only have a muted effect on the economy. That’s because more than a quarter of homeowners with a mortgage can’t qualify for a new loan, and many who can are so financially stretched that little of the money they save will end up in store cash registers.

“If you’re worried about making it month to month and your mortgage is your biggest payment you’re not going out to buy a car and a lot of Christmas gifts,” said Guy Cecala, publisher of Inside Mortgage Finance, a trade publication in Bethesda, Md.

Stuart Cassell in Sarasota, Fla., is putting his $80 monthly refinanse savings into his nest egg, while product development manager Subash Ramnani in Chicago is using the extra $300 a month from his refinancing to pay for graduate school. Jennifer Burke and her husband in Bel Air, Md., are saving the additional $240 a month as they wait out the recession and raise a one-year-old daughter.

Marcus Leef’s $150 monthly savings is going to daycare costs and personal savings. Leef, a consultant in Hartford County, Conn., has seen his stock portfolio plummet 40 percent, his retirement savings plunge by half and his corporate stock tumble by 60 percent this year. He’s not optimistic.

“My view is the economy is in the toilet. It’s going to get worse before it gets better,” he said. “If rates drop another point tomorrow, I’ll (refinance) again the day after.”

Those are the luckiest homeowners. Les Berman, a mortgage broker in Encino, Calif., said most borrowers contacting him have interest-only mortgages and they want to lock into a fixed-rate loan. They’re not saving any money each month if they do that; instead, they’re taking higher payments to get out of riskier loans.

“They want that security. They want to protect themselves against the future,” he said, even if it means shelling out more each month.

Other borrowers, like Eric Dudek in Grand Rapids, Mich., are waiting to see if rates drop further after hearing reports that the government is considering a proposal to lower the rate on 30-year home loans to 4.5 percent by buying more mortgage-backed securities.

“I’m thinking maybe I should hold off, you know?” said Dudek, who would use the savings from a refinancing to pay off student loans.

Hormone changes can generate migraines

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My daughter, who is 41, has been getting really bad migraine headaches just before her periods. Is it due to menopause?

— V.M.

Her headaches are not due to menopause. They come from her menstrual cycle, and they’re called menstrual migraines. A migraine sufferer often can identify things that give rise to a headache — foods, alcohol, physical exertion, too little sleep, too much sleep, hunger, bright lights and loud noise. For quite a few women, menstrual periods trigger the headache. The sudden drop in the female hormone estrogen that takes place at the time of a menstrual period precipitates headaches in these women.

Your daughter can take medicine prior to her anticipated menstrual period to prevent the headache. Naprosyn or one of the many other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, taken two days before the period begins, often can avert menstrual migraines. They should be taken for as long as the headache has lasted in the past.

Another approach is birth-control pills. The ones that stop periods for six months to a year are particularly useful. Seasonale and Lybrel are two such preparations.

Most migraine sufferers are aware of the triptan drugs, medicines that have had a huge impact on migraine treatment. There are seven such drugs, and I won’t mention them all. Maxalt and Relpax are two of these drugs. The triptans should be used as the anti-inflammatory drugs are used — two days before onset of periods and continued for the length of the usual migraine.

Three foreign exchange students find many differences in American culture Lakeside High School with RAECHAL TOWNER SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP Lakeside High School has always been known for its cultural diversity. This year Lakeside s diversity has broadened further by welcoming three foreign exchange students from three different countries. Gyu Lee also known as Sally Choi from South Korea is hosted by the Pamela and Peter Bean family. Hong Cao from Vietnam is hosted by the Ruth and Douglas Edwards family and Cathrine Mic Olsen from Denmark is hosted by the Jill Spellman family. All three students are visiting until after their senior graduation in the spring. By sharing their country s ideals each day they teach Lakeside students that there are alternate ways in which to live. Each girl was interviewed and asked many questions about the comparisons and differences of their home land and the ! United States. The questions included school rules and schedules socialization entertainment and foods. They also addressed such things as personal relationships among their peers and parents and talked a little bit about how they got to know each other. Sally Choi is a fairly quiet girl who is tall and wears glasses. It was apparent she was eager to answer any questions. She said there were many differences between American education and that of her home country. One noticeable difference is that the teachers move form one classroom to another rather than the students moving between class periods. Uniforms are mandatory at her school and the hours are considerably longer. She was required to attend school six days a week from a.m. to p.m. each day except for Saturday when the school days ends at p.m. Other differences include the choices of recreation. In South Korea going to amusement parks and going figure skating are very popular. Students ride buses or subways to and f! rom these activities. Since come to America hot dogs have quickly become her favorite food. But back home she prefers sushi over everything. Sally is very quick to point out that she has made many friends at Lakeside and plans to keep in touch via email with everyone. While she admits to being homesick her remedy is to email her parents daily and talk with her parents weekly. Hong Cao has a slightly different perspective. The school scheduling is a real adjustment to her because in Vietnam she attends classes on alternate days either during the morning or afternoon. This is similar to our college class schedules. Also her home school has few total square feet but has more students per class with some classes having to students. She also noted that her school has less extracurricular activities and no lunch period. For fun Hong and her friends enjoy going to movies or each other s houses but it is very uncommon to spend the night at a friend s home. The main mode of transportation in Vietnam is either motorcycle or bicycle. Cars are very limite! d. She said she is delighted that her house mom loves to cook and introduced her to pancakes which have become a favorite of hers. As far as dating Hong said when you date no study. When you study no date. Like Sally Hong said she dearly misses her family and daily communicates with them via emails. Cathrine graduated three years ago after completing the ninth grade. She started learning English in the fourth grade with Danish being the primary language. Cathrine said after high school there is no college only school after school. In her after school program she participated in many sports. Gymnastics and dance were her favorites and she would like to become a teacher in one of those disciplines. She too has acquired a new love for one of America s favorite snacks namely Oreo cookies. She also misses everybody from school and home and talks with them frequently on the phone. ‘Kamagra smugglers’ in court

Johannesburg - Two Indian nationals charged with selling an unregistered substance appeared briefly in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The two, aged 29 and 30, were arrested on Thursday after they were found with 144 Kamagra tablets, 13 Oral Kamagra gel products and 58 Cialis tablets.

The tablets were imported from India and have the same effect as Viagra.

Prosecutor Thandolwethu Tutu said the two should remain in custody pending further investigations as the drugs had to be taken to the laboratory for analysis.

He said the two were also a flight risk because they were not South Africans citizens and their permits to be in the country had expired.

The case was postponed to January 30 for a formal bail application and further investigations and the men were remanded in custody.

O2 ran the six-month trial, which involved putting Oyster card technology and a Barclaycard Visa card into a Nokia 6131 handset.

Nine out of ten of O2’s testers reported that they were happy to use the near-field communications (NFC) technology, with convenience, ease of use and the boon of having such a unique device all scoring highly with the satisfied participants.

Almost nine out of ten (89 per cent) claimed they would use it again and it was apparently noticeable that one in five of the special Nokia owners made more journeys on public transport than they would normally have done during the period of the experiment.

Nokia will now have a keen interest in trying to make Nokia mobile phone Tube travel a reality - 87 per cent of the testers said the ability to use Oyster on a mobile phone was likely to influence their choice of phone.

Anglo American Plc (AGL SJ), the mining company which has the biggest weighting on the exchange, declined for a sixth day, dropping 12.50 rand, or 3.6 percent, to 334. BHP Billiton Ltd. Copper for delivery in three months slid as much as 3.4 percent to $6,980 a metric ton in London, heading for a second weekly slide as crude oil tumbled and the dollar climbed against the euro, eroding demand for investments in raw materials. Nickel, lead, zinc and aluminum prices also dropped.

Liberty International Plc (LBT SJ) dropped 1.90 rand, or 1.4 percent, to 130.10, the lowest since Aug. 25. The largest owner of shopping centers in the U.K. was rated “sell” in new coverage at Societe Generale SA after gains last month.

The two latests visits to the vets one for Clover and one for Cosmo way more than my car payment five times the amount MY doctor charges for an office visit and one third the amount of my mortgage payment. Here s a piece of advice to all of you out there raising children and hoping that that little cutie will grow up to be a brain surgeon or cardiologist think dogs and cats and hamsters Think Veterinarian I like the vet practice that I use its very nearby the techs and assistants are very nice and helpful the doctors are all wonderful and competent and my dogs like visiting them A LOT. If I went back to Day One and added up the money that I ve spent on vet bills since when Clover came to live with me and then more recently when Cosmo moved in I would faint. Having a sick dog is a lot! like having a sick baby neither can tell you where it hurts how bad it hurts or what the hell they ate to make them that sick. You would think that with the money you re paying at the vets that they would be able to figure that out pretty darn quick. Wave some veterinarian magic wand and pronounce Don t worry. Its just a pair of socks. Some castor oil should fix the problem. Clover s latest issues consistent panting fast heart beat watery nose and some twitching turned out to be constipation that seems to have been sorted out with an increase of fiber in her diet. Vets Clover More Fiber. Vets Seizures Tests MRI Epilepsy Clover Mucilex and a food change. I actually figured this one out myself after noticing that the symptoms stopped after a walk and a poop. I just hope that I m right and we can move on to the next issue whatever whenever. Cosmo s trip to the vet this week ear infection. . Can t fix that with Mucilex but I gave him some anyway. Cosmo is such a good patient. ! When I take out the ear wash and medicine. He will follow me to the chair and put his head in my lap. He never complains. Whenever we go to the vets Cosmo is always trying to escape through the door that leads to the back rooms. I ve never figured that one out except that he must know where they stash the dog treats because if it were me I would have bad memories of visiting there one winter day intact and coming out missing a couple of things. Clover loves the vets because they love her. She can t get enough attention and every tech in the place will be slipping her a biscuit treat from the minute she walks in the door. I ve had to ask them to not feed her while we re there . she s on a diet Speaking of which both Clover and Cosmo upon entering the vets offices head straight for the large scale so they can get weighed in. They promptly sit down and wait for the announcement which is written into their record by the desk clerk. Cosmo is down pounds to Clover is steady at . One thing that I m very proud of. My dogs have never started a fight at! the vets they ve never pissed on the floor or anything else Clover did throw up a couple of times during one visit and they ve never snapped at or bit anyone at the Veterinarians office no matter what they were trying to stick in their ears or up their butts. ONE of two police officers involved in a fatal shootout with a gunman in Melbourne late last night was a rookie cop on her first night shift. It was a horrific incident as you can imagine for anybody the rookie is obviously suffering from shock as are our other members involved Victorian Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Lucinda Nolan said today. We are offering her the appropriate services and counselling with that. Police said the shooting happened after a car carrying three men was stopped by police on Clarendon Street South Melbourne. Ms Nolan said police had pulled over the car for a routine check after it made an illegal turn. When police searched the car they found a sawn off shotgun and drugs Ms Nolan said. Two men were arrested but a third man fled pursued by police spokeswoman Marika Fengler said. The gunfight began when he w! as confronted by the two police officers near a service station and fast food restaurant. There were shots exchanged between the police and the offender and and the senior connie has been shot in the leg Ms Fengler said. We ve got one male deceased and we don t have an identity on him. Mr Anand said he heard about shots fired. Dead man known to police Police say the man shot dead had an extensive history of drug related and violent crimes. The year old man from Essendon who has not so far been named was also the subjec! t of four outstanding warrants for his arrest Ms Nolan said today. He s got an extensive criminal history with priors of violence and drugs she said. Ms Nolan said the police officers did the best they could under the circumstances. You ve got to look at the circumstances they re placed in she said. It s horrific for anybody. I think they acted with exceptional bravery and I m really proud of them. She said two officers had fired at the dead man. But the folks at Chrysler at least until they started their own discount gas promotion this week made it clear that fooling with the price of gas amounts to fooling with their future. Who can plan a lineup let alone how to make an entire fleet hit mileage standards if the government intervenes in gas prices Presumed Republican nominee John McCain made ! the overture late last month on the idea of a summer gas tax holiday followed quickly by Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. To his credit Democratic candidate Barack Obama declined to join in this pandering. The three of them all U.S. senators know perfectly well that making gas cheaper flies in the face of other plans they all tout to various degrees such as making America more energy secure and ratcheting back emissions that can cause global warming. Besides it s hardly clear drivers would even see much savings. Because oil is a sellers market now prices will rise if motorists react to a gas tax cut by driving more or worse buying a bigger vehicle than they need. But you don t have to be a market expert to understand the auto companies distress at getting mixed messages from Washington. Even Chrysler s gas plan gas instead of cash as an incentive says less about long term planning than the urgent need to sell existing vehicles. The Detroit Three finally seem to be seri! ous about decent small cars hybrid vehicles and even all electric engines both to meet federal mandates and to have products that will sell as gas gets more expensive. Their investments will go for naught if the federal government zigzags. How can you be encouraging automakers to produce more fuel efficient vehicles and then do something like that There s an inconsistency said Jim Press the former Toyota Motor Corp. executive who now serves as a Chrysler president and vice chairman. Inconsistency is nothing new in presidential campaigns of course. For McCain and Clinton this is a fairly risk free suggestion because it s unlikely the rest of Congress would go along with a gas tax holiday let alone the loss of highway construction revenue or the other cost cutting that would be required to balance the budget. The hole in your wallet from gas prices may hurt but it s less painful in the long run than undermining the auto industry. Johann Hari Tuesday May Schools and Relationships The NSPCC and I m sure not going to make myself popular arguing with a group as respected as them are s aying that schools should teach more about relationships in sex education . This comes in response to data from Childline suggesting children a day ring up saying they feel pressured to have sex. And in that light the NSPCC suggestion sounds wildly sane but I have to admit it actually made me flinch a little. At the moment schools are only obliged to teach the facts of human reproduction. The first thing that frightens me is that if the syllabus is expanded out to include relationships what is the risk that the facts of biology will be lost I think children have a right to understand how their bodies work in factual scientific terms. Many especially faith schools are reluctant to teach these facts and given the chance to hide them discreetly behind a barrage of warnings about the unholy ! nature of any kind of relationship not fully approved by religious leaders the message could be watered down beyond recognition. It s also difficult to understand how children will react to hearing the facts of biology lined up next to what can be nothing more than advice about relationships. I think a clear line needs to be drawn between the facts of how the human body works and advice about how to deal with the stresses and strains of relationships. Some mergers are defensive some are driven by competitive opportunity and others largely by management egos and investment bankers hooking for commissions. This seems to be one of the latter Yahoo was over valued relative to its earnings potential before the deal and Microsoft s premium over the penultimate closing price seems absurdly over the top. What I imagine note imagine not know happened is that the change in Bill Gate s role at Microsoft gave some of the other senior players the opportunity to commit their supporters by ramming through a deal last researched sometime in September or October of i.e. before what I think of as the Soros dip hit the market. . So bottom line I think the best thing Microsoft s board could do is find a legal way to get out with minimal losses and the most likely thing they ll do is destroy every cent of market value they re putting into Yahoo in an ego driven attempt to merge MSN into it. Now they re apparently dropping the deal after raisi! ng their offer premium by a further billion in weekend negotiations. Heads are going to roll at Microsoft over this look for some key executive resignations and re assignments a couple of months from now as the dust settles and the winners consolidate their positions. At Yahoo however the damage may extend far beyond the usual circles of winners and losers associated with this type of M A battle the organization may be so conflicted that it tears itself apart.
